Submarine:  Overnight in Manitowoc

(Most recent information is at the top of this page.  Older information follows.)

For the first time, Pack 42 visited the WWII submarine in Wisconsin and stayed aboard overnight!

First, we drove to the city and rendezvoused at a pizza place.

The Webelos demnstrated their cooking skills with a pizza smoothie with lemonade and Tobasco.

Then, to the museum.

And then, aboard!

There were 28 Manitowoc submarines.

Four of them, Golet, Kete, Lagato, and Robalo,

along with 336 officers and enlisted men were lost.

The submarines built here sank 132 enemy ships and helped to end the war.

Dear Pack 42,

A brief note to thank Piet Kreunen for his time and efforts this past weekend. I think all those that attended will agree that the trip to the U.S.S. Cobia (photo of a model is attached) was a great success and something the boys will never forget or experience again unless they enlist. I was personally humbled when thinking about the great bravery and sacrifice of the sailors that served on this submarine and it was an honor to spend a few brief moments walking in their footsteps.

Please check the website (or Facebook page) in the coming days for pictures of the overnight event.

Thanks again Piet!!!

Ahoy Submariners,

We will meet next Saturday, February 9 in the Grace Methodist Church parking lot at 2:00 p.m. From this check in, we can decide whether groups would like to carpool and we will trade cell numbers. We will then drive north to Manitowoc and meet up again at Tony's Pizza by 5:30 p.m. for dinner. Tony's Pizza is located at 2204 Washington St. Manitowoc, WI 54220 (920) 682-8669 (The pizza dinner is already included in your fee.)

We will leave Tony's Pizza at 6:45 p.m. and travel to the Wisconsin Maritime Maritime for a 7:00 p.m. check in. Our program begins promptly at 7:25 p.m. and will run until lights out around midnight on the submarine.

You will need to bring your own light, dry snack (granola bar, pretzels, etc.) and water. We will have this light snack in the mess hall on the submarine at approximately 10:00 p.m.

Please do not bring gum, candy or electronic devices, per museum policy. Cameras are allowed, video equipment is not. No portable electronics are allowed, such as, radios, iPads, music (iPod, cd/mp3), game systems, tv, phones with games, etc. Additionally, please do not bring any type of knife, tool or cutting implement. It is a very full program, but if you think your Scout may need something else to do, please bring a book, deck of cards or a pad/pencil to draw memories.

You need to bring the following:

• Wear Class A uniform
• Sleeping bag and pillow
• Flashlight
• Personal toiletries and a change of clothes, if needed.
• Full shoes

Ahoy Future Submariners,

Batten the hatches and prepare to DIVE ... into FUN.

If you are receiving this email, you are confirmed on the USS Cobia Submarine for 09Feb13 ... pending receipt of your $50 per person payment. All parent/scout pairs are $100, and the following parent/2 scout familes with 3 spots are $150: Haller, Burke, McCarthy and Lane.

The boat is full, and we now have a waiting list. If you can't go, please let me know asap.

Please send or drop off a check made out to Cub Scout Pack 42 to my house, 472 Mawman, by Monday, December 10. This will secure your spot.

In order to follow the process required by both the NEIC and the Manitowoc Maritime Museum, we need confirmed names as the Pack needs to submit paperwork on behalf of our group.

FYI ... in addition to those on this email, we have 11 families who are already confirmed and paid. Thank you.

I hope you are looking forward to this unique experience as much as I am. This is one of the few places in the world you can stay overnight on a submarine without a four year commitment and a crew cut :)

We will go over further details at the January Pack Meeting and through email.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Piet
Asst. Cubmaster

Submarine Overnight in Manitowoc, WI

This February 9, 2013, a Saturday night, we have reserved a limited number of spots - 65 only - on the USS Cobia in Manitowoc, WI. The USS Cobia is a real WWII submarine docked aside the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. It is a 136 mile drive north of Lake Bluff.

You can sign up on October 19 before or after the Pack Meeting.

The sign up will be first-come, first-served at the Pack Meeting for Scout and their accompanying Adult/Parent. The reservations taken at the Pack Meeting will be prioritized by rank, starting with Webelos II, down through Tiger. If we have extra spots, non-scout siblings will be invited.

The cost is $50 per person. This includes the overnight bunk on the sub, tour and educational and interactive activities on the sub, Pizza Hut dinner Saturday evening, a snack, a USS Cobia patch for the Scout, and admission to the museum on Sunday. Checks should be written out to "Pack 42" at the Pack Meeting once your reservation has been taken.

We will meet at the Pizza Hut in Manitowoc near the Maritime Museum at 6:00 p.m. for dinner. We will board the boat for the overnight promptly at 7:25 p.m. You should plan for at least a 2 1/2 hour drive from Lake Bluff to Manitowoc. Carpooling will be ad-hoc.

Sunday morning, the program is concluded by cleaning and disembarking the sub at 8:00 a.m. Your overnight includes admission to the museum on Sunday all day. You may leave for breakfast on your own and return to the museum afterwards.

A historical flier will be handed out by ACM Kreunen and questions will be addressed at the Pack Meeting.

I am guessing that all who want to go will be able to, however, we will give priority to older scouts as we will plan to do the event again another year, allowing younger scout to get the experience also. In the event we do run out of bunks, an option is also to stay in the Best Western next to the museum and visit the museum and have dinner. Sibling could do this with family also.

(Piet Kreunen is the event chairman and will handle the sign-up and questions.)

On February 9/10 (Sat/Sun) Pack 42 will sleep overnight on a real WWII submarine!
