Subject: Popcorn Show N Deliver Information
Hi Pack 42 Families-
We received some new information from the Northeast Council for selling popcorn.
The Council encourages packs to sell in a Show N Deliver format. It is a
transition from previous years but will be the future of Cub Scouts popcorn
selling.
If your scout ran out of a supply, and a customer requests it, it will be
filled. On Super Sunday, November 4th all packs redistribute the popcorn and
what is not filled on Nov 4th is filled by Trail Ends and is delivered by
November 15th to Lake Bluff for your scout to pick up.
If you have not gotten an order form, in a manila folder on Randy’s porch (339
Birkdale, LB) there are forms to take, he will also have them at Pumpkin Fest
and the Friday, Oct 19th Pack meeting.
Go Out and Sell and Reach your son goals and Have Fun!!!!!
From the Popcorn Manual here is their recommended Sales Methods Overview:
There are four main methods of the sale. The most important methods are “Take
Order” and “Show-N-Deliver”.
1. Take Order. This method relies on order forms that the Scouts circulate among
friends, family, neighbors, and so forth. Your final popcorn order fills the
Take Order phase of the sale along with your leftovers from your initial product
delivery. This same form is also used for Show-N-Deliver.
2. Show-N-Deliver. The Scout shows the products to the customer using his Order
form. After the customer makes a selection, he then offers to deliver the
product immediately. Popcorn is typically transported door-to-door (but
initially kept out of the consumer’s sight) in a red wagon or the supervising
parent’s car. This economizes on time committed to the sale, eliminates the need
to return to the same door to complete a sale, and has been shown to yield
dramatically higher dollar sales per hour.
For successful Show-N-Deliver Sales, please consider the following points:
It is essential that the Scout show the customer the Take Order Form, not a
wagonload of popcorn. In fact, we recommend that the wagon initially be out of
the consumer’s sight. The sale is made based on the Take Order form and, after
the customer selects products, then the customer is given the option of taking
immediate delivery. Our marketing research demonstrates that you will sell more
popcorn per hour if you use this method. This is actually more efficient with
your time; it eliminates the need to make two visits for every sale because the
product is readily available for purchase.
3. An additional arm of the sale is our Corporate Sale. Scouts can approach
companies and offer these products as gifts to valued employees and customers.
This is a way corporations can purchase gifts for their clients and support the
Boy Scouts. Last year, several individual orders valuing thousands of dollars
were filled. Any individual, high volume order can be handled through special
arrangements with the Council office. Please contact Popcorn Central for more
information 847-748-9149.
4. This year we continue our fully integrated on-line system available for
internet credit card popcorn sales. Customers enter a Scout key code on the
Trails-end.com site, http://www.orderpopcorn.com/ and the sale commission is
paid to your Unit. OrderPopcorn.com will mail the products to the consumer
directly. Several points need consideration:
Each Scout must individually signup on the on-line system at
http://www.trails-end.com/ and obtains a 7 digit numeric sales code number. That
number gets distributed to the Scout’s customers. When the customer buys popcorn
on-line with this number and the individual Scout is credited for the sale in
the on-line system.
Scouts can have key codes, not Units. This is a change from years past. Unit
Leaders can sign up with the system to monitor how their Scouts are selling, but
no selling can be applied to a Unit in a general sense. However, since the funds
are distributed from the Council to your unit, then your unit controls the use
of the revenue from on-line sales. It is up to each unit to establish a policy
for the use of the funds.
On-line sales apply for both the regular prize system and the bonus programs
including the $600 Club, the $1000 Club, the $1500 Bonus gift card, the
scholarship program, and the $4000 Bulls tickets.
“Door-to-door” generates an average of 3 and up to 4 -5 times more sales per
hour than site sales according to national marketing studies. We have observed
this in our own Council. Therefore, “Door-to-door” yields the most efficient use
of your parental fundraising time. When a Scout sells in his neighborhood, 63%
of consumers who know the Scout will purchase a product. 91% of those who
purchase will do so again. Site sales do not generate as much personal
recognition.
By selling and collecting money at the same time you avoid the extra time
expenditure involved with a second visit in a traditional “Take Order” sale.
However, it is important to utilize the “Take Order” sales form before showing
the consumer your “traveling stock.” Show-N-Deliver is not a traveling site
sale.
We hope this information is informative and helpful to understand the best
practices shared to us.

Subject: Boy Scouts and the 2012 Popcorn Sale
Dear Pack 42 Families-
The purpose of the Boy Scouts of America is to provide
an educational program for the boys and young adults to build desirable
qualities of character, to train in the responsibilities of participating
citizenship and to develop personal fitness.
There are different stages to help the boys grow:
Tiger-is a family and home
centered part of the Boy Scouts of America(BSA) program and encourages ethical
decision making skills for first grade boys. These boys emphasize shared
leadership, learning about the community, and family understanding.
Cub Scouting-is a family and home centered part of the
BSA program that helps develop ethical decision making skills in the 2nd and 3rd
grade. Activities emphasize character development, citizenship training, and
personal fitness.
Webelos Scouting-is a family and home centered part of
BSA program that develops ethical decision making skills for 4th and 5th grade
boys. Webelos Scouts participate in more advanced activities that begin to
prepare them for Boy Scouts.
All the Pack activities relate to these characters and selling popcorn is just another step in their personal growth. When joining Boy Scouts the boys are learning new individual skills, group skills in the Den and community skills in the Pack. By having Pack meetings and recognitions it shows that they are doing a good for the entire pack and the community.
Being a part of selling popcorn is another learning
lesson, fitness for our boys and a wonderful opportunity for the family to help
teach the boys good communication skills and get more connected with the
community. The Lake Bluff community looks forward to our boys each year selling
this popcorn. The pack has three different levels of supplies that you can
choose when picking up this Saturday. We understand that you are all busy so
take the amount that is realistic for you and your sons goals.
All Cub Scouts sell with their parents but especially
the tiger boys need to sell with a parent and we suggest selling to people they
know and are familiar with in the home, family and community.
When the boys get to Cub Scouting and Webelos they
have a better understanding of the pack and selling and the rewards and
opportunities that go along with it. As a Pack we support if your son wants to
sell just one pack or reach higher goals of obtaining college scholarships or
being the Pack top sells and be recognized among his peers.
This Saturday, September 22nd
is the Lake Bluff official date of kick off at 9:00 am or after the campout. The
families pick up the supplies at Samantha Borland’s house on the corner of W.
Sheridan Place and Green Bay Road. I will be here most of the day but would like
to stop around 5:00 pm on Saturday night. Please
open the attached sheet of kits
so when you arrive you pick up the supplies that meet your sons goals.
If at any time you would like to pick up more
supplies, I am home most afternoons so email or call 847.235.5151 and I am happy
to help. I will also put a note on my door. Open for popcorn pickup or Closed
for Popcorn pickup. When checking out additional supplies they do need to be
signed out by an ADULT. After the supplies are signed out, the scout’s family is
responsible for that inventory until Check out.
Lake Bluff Pack 42 is opening up Check out on Sunday,
October 28th but the official last day is that Friday, November 2nd for boys
wanting to sell towards the college scholarship program.
We look forward to a fun
popcorn season, if you have any tips or suggestion to share please send them to
me or Randy Earls because during the season we will be sending out notes of
encouragement to the families.
